Talawanda High School E-News - February 13th, 2020

Reminders:

• Don’t forget- 2/26 is ACT day for juniors. Juniors ONLY report to school that day!

• End of Course tests will be the week of  April 13th through the 17th.

• Parent-teacher conferences will be February 20th, from  3:30- 7:00. Contact Mrs. Roy at 273-3200 to schedule a conference.

• Info about the Best Buddies Spring Social here!

• Students and parents who want to travel to Italy and Greece with Ms. Mann and Mr. Tincher in 2021 should attend an informational meeting on Feb 20 at 7:00 in room 319. This is right after parent/teacher conferences. 

• The HS School Counseling Department will be hosting a Scholarship Review event on Thursday, February 20th, from 5:30-6:30 PM in the HS Media Center. This event is for seniors and their families (or juniors and their families wanting to get a preview of the local scholarship process) who are interested in a review of the THS Local and OCF Scholarship Booklets. There will be a brief overview of the current scholarships available and the application criteria followed by a work session for anyone needing assistance completing their scholarship applications. The THS School Counselors will be on hand to answer questions about the process and requirements. Every year, we have multiple scholarships that remain unapplied for even though we believe that a number of our seniors fit the eligibility criteria. We hope that this event will connect every senior student considering post-secondary schooling (2 or 4 year) with all of the potential scholarship opportunities they should be considering. 

• Local scholarship packets are now available online and in the Counseling Office.   The deadline to have applications turned back to the Counseling Office is Friday, 2/28 by 3:00.

• This past weekend the swim teams took part in their sectional swim meets, the first step of the state tournament.  Both teams represented themselves very well in the Cincinnati Sectional. The boys placed 5th at the meet and the girls placed 4th.  In total, 15 athletes are moving on to the Southwest District meet this weekend at Miami, where berths to the State Championships will be on the line.  John Anzano, Ben Crowder, Blake Madden, Maren Patterson, and Mercy Patterson all qualified to districts in individual events, with Maren being seeded 7th in the district in both the 100 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke.  Also qualifying to districts were Rhyan Meyers, Maxx Gregg, Alex Carlson, Noah Femiani, Luke Liang, Mary Kate Huddleston, and Hannah Lippincott, all of whom were members along with the aforementioned athletes of 5 different relays that all qualified for districts.  The boys 200 Free Relay is currently the highest seeded relay at 6th in the district.

Last night Sam Hool won the Southwest District Division 1 Diving meet for the second year in a row.  By virtue of his win he qualified to compete in the State Diving Championship meet which will be held next Saturday in Canton, OH.  Girls district diving is tonight where Addie Lehman will be competing for Talawanda. Addie is the first girl to qualify for the District Diving meet in over 10 years!

• The Talawanda Yearbook is accepting senior portraits from now until March 6th.  If you would like your Senior to have their professional portrait in the yearbook, please email your .jpeg image greater than 1MB to yearbook@talawanda.org.  

• Senior Ads are on sale now for the Talawanda Yearbook!  Embarrass them with baby pictures or give them an encouraging message to remember their time at THS!  Contact Mr. Zimmerman at zimmermana@talawanda.org if you are interested in purchasing space for your Senior in the book!

• Dust off your zoot suits and make sure your seams are straight: THS is hosting "An Evening of Jazz" on Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center.  This swingin' evenin' is a collaborative effort between the five THS choirs and the THS Jazz Band.  You'll think you are in the front row at The Cotton Club as our 120 talented cats and kittens present jazz from all eras.  Ragtime, Latin, big band swing, Broadway showtunes, funk, blues, and even adapted rock and roll covers will be represented.  The joint will be jumpin' with hits and harmonies that will keep your toes tappin' and fingers snappin'. Admission is free, and you will not want to miss this event!

• Juniors who would like to serve on the Prom Steering Committee should pick up an application outside Ms. Mann's room, 319. 

• The Prom is May 2, 2020, at Miami's Shriver Center Multipurpose Room, 8:30-midnight. Tickets will go on sale in April for $30 each, limit 2 per Junior or Senior.

• Youth Softball Clinic Feb 29th/Mar 1st 3-6 PM - Contact Coach Scott Davie at THS for information
