Marshall Elementary Weekly E-News

February 15, 2018

A Safe, Organized, Accountable, and Respectful Community

The mission of Marshall Elementary is to work as a community to achieve higher levels of thinking and learning by empowering every learner everyday.

School News and Information

We are all very concerned hearing the new about the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida and our thoughts and prayers go to all of the students and families.  We know this can be difficult for our young students to understand and to feel safe.  We will continue to follow our school safety procedures that are already in place and to follow our safety training keeping in mind that it is important for all of us that if we see something or hear something we need to say something.

In talking about this event with elementary-aged students, the American School Counselor Association recommend doing the following:

• Trying to keep routines as normal as possible. Kids gain security from the predictability of routine, including attending school.

• Limiting exposure to television and the news.

• Being honest with kids and share with them as much information as they are developmentally able to handle.

• Listening to kids’ fears and concerns.

• Reassuring kids that the world is a good place to be, but that there are people who do bad things.

• Rebuilding and reaffirming attachments and relationships.

Attached are some additional resources from the National Association of School Psychologist.
