March 2017- Board of Education Meeting Summary

 

Public Participation:

 

  • Concerns shared about the potential elimination of the THS Girls Field Hockey program.

  • The THS Athletic Boosters requested the BOE consider an additional $5k for uniforms and equipment.

  • A senior citizen raised concerns regarding taxes for people on fixed incomes.

  • TEA representative, Greg Cawein, shared concerns regarding proposed cuts to personnel.

Athletic Update- Wes Cole, THS A.D.  :

  • Recognized Swimming, Basketball, and Wrestling

  • Swimming - SWOC Coach of the year

  • Girls basketball program comes in second

  • 1 SWOC athlete of the year for girls basketball- Emma Wright

  • 5 state qualifiers for swimming- Adam Mandrell(4 time state qualifier), Noah Curry, John Anzano, Dylan Brading, Sean Mondello

  • 2 state qualifiers for wrestling- Sean Mondello, Preston Bressler

  • 1 state qualifier for diving- Sean Mondello

  • 55% of THS athletes also meet the High Achieving Academic Component to SWOC

MJ Roberts- Legislative

  • Dr. Roberts & Mr. Davis met at the State House on 3/15/17 to hear a presentation and to network with legislators and lobbyists.

  • Mrs. Spivey, Dr. Roberts, Mr. Davis, and Mrs. Morrish met with Candice Keller (House) on 3/24/17 to share concerns about education legislation.

  • Margaret Condit invited Dr. Roberts and Mr. Davis to listen to the session where Congress voted on a variety of house bills on 3/15/17.

  • Southwest Legislative Group awarded the TSD Board of Education the Gold Level Service Award for 2016 for effectiveness.

  • Kramer update:

    • Some adjustments and minor replacements will be completed during Spring Break.  

    • The state of Ohio just approved the last phase.  

    • The “brick project” has been approved...details to come.  

    • The extra dirt is being moved.

    • Trailers are being moved this week.

    • Abatement is 2 months ahead of schedule.

 

  • Marshall Update:

    • The BOE will have an agreement with SHP to do an assessment of the property.

    • No commitment has been made other than the resolution for an assessment.

 

  • THS Athletic Storage Facility- Cross County Pole Building will complete the “design to build”.

 

  • Amtrak Update:  City of Oxford & Miami University have provided letters of support and financial support.  There is a need for a letter of support indicating TSD would work in partnership with those two institutions (no funding).

 

  • In April look for a presentation of building energy efficiency and performance.




Superintendent Report Highlights:

  • Supplemental Review Committee will review supplemental positions/programs for potential additions/deletions.  First reading.

 

  • Substitute Classified Positions- pay rate increase.  TSD is not competitive in Butler County.  Increase rate from $9 per hour to $10.25.  Motion was approved 4-0.

 

  • New logo approved 4-0.  The new logo will be part of the new district website to be unveiled the first week of April.  2017_0110_Talawanda_T_Logo_C.jpg

 

  • Revised or new policies can found on TSD Board Docs.

 

  • BASA/Community Advisory Update:  Serving as an advocacy for students and public education.  These groups may be hearing the concerns of both educators and parents regarding over-testing practices.  There is hope that ESSA may be revised, and with more local control.

 

  • Student Registration Software opportunity may be coming to TSD before the close of the school year.
